Paramyxovirus
Pigeon paramyxovirus type 1 is a contagious viral disease that can affect the nervous, digestive and respiratory systems. Laboratory confirmation matters because trauma, toxins and other infections can mimic it.
How to recognise it
- Head twisting, circling, tremors, poor balance, missed pecks or inability to fly normally.
- Very watery droppings, increased thirst, weight loss or depression.
- Signs vary widely and can overlap with salmonellosis, poisoning and head trauma.
Usual treatment approach
- There is no direct cure for the virus; care is supportive and may include safe hydration, nutrition, warmth and treatment of secondary problems under veterinary direction.
- Isolate from other birds and use dedicated bowls and clothing because virus can spread in faeces and respiratory secretions.
- Vaccination is preventive, not a treatment for an already sick bird; suspected notifiable disease should be discussed promptly with a veterinarian.
